Eleanor Campbell
B: 1894; D: 1986. Principal and first Dick and Jane illustrator. Biography
First and principal illustrator of Dick and Jane books (1940-1956), as well as other children's books of the period (Volland Publishers, and others). Studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Paris for several years. Campbell worked in Phildadelphia most of her professional life, working on the Dick and Jane books and contributing artwork for various advertisements such as Kellogg's Corn Flakes and Weatena Cereal. Campbell's original watercolors for the Dick and Jane books are extremely rare. Most of the originals were disposed of by Campbell herself. The artwork is vivid, full of color and expressive; and the story behind the art, ushering in a "new age" of children's readers, is legendary. |
